The goal of “Nothing from Something” is to convey the always-moving quality of the Earth’s water, and the ways waning quantity affects that inherent transience. It comprises a Center for Book Arts exhibition dubbed “Trickle” that promotes water conservation with an emphasis on poetry’s role in affirming the necessity of water to life. A promotional poster with a representation of police tape communicates this intent, and a 35-second promotional motion graphic advertisement was created incorporating motifs from the poster and the contents of the exhibition.
The main component of “Nothing from Something” is an 8-page zine and fold-out poster that implements a passage from Walt Whitman’s “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking”. The poem is set on a beach; water is the narrative’s constant backdrop. In it, a boy learns of nature’s importance to human consciousness through the observation of two nesting mockingbirds, one of whom goes missing, a representation of death.
